Overall Image : Overpriced Average Japanese Food in a tiny corner of the coffee shop
Review : Trident Gurgaon is a beautiful hotel. No doubt about it. I could spend hours there just drinking wine. It really is a work of art. So when a hotel like Trident comes up with a Japanese Restaurant, you would expect it to be exceptionally designed and authentic.
You will be disappointed to know that the restaurant itself is a restaurant within the coffee shop. A small corner to be exact. Now I would not be in a position to review all the food that the restaurant has to offer but I will be reviewing the sushi which is the benchmark of a good Japanese restaurant. If your Sushi is good, you can get away with anything. If your sushi is bad, it doesn’t matter what else is on the menu.
Now normally, I would compare Konomi with a restaurant within the same price band. If I were to do this, this review would be excessively short. For example, I would have to compare this restaurant’s sushi with TK’s at Hyatt of 360 at Oberoi Delhi because the Sushi is excessively expensive. An assorted platter can cost you Rs. 3,000 or more. I’m going to do Konomi a favour and just end this paragraph by saying that the food is not worth the money. In short, the fish did not taste fresh and the sushi was bland. Just fish and rice which is really not what people expect from sushi anymore. Where was the caviar? The Philly cheese? The wasabi mayo?
Now I’m going to make this review interesting. I’m going to compare Konomi with a restaurant way below its price range. In this case, Yum Yum Tree (YYT). YYT has an awesome Sushi conveyor belt. At lunch, it’s all you can eat with sushi, dimsum, desserts and drinks for a little over Rs. 1,000 per person. At the risk of being brutally honest, if someone sponsored my meal and gave me a choice between a free meal at YYT or Konomi, I’d pick YYT without thinking.
It just goes to show that just because your restaurant is in a big fancy hotel and the prices are really high, it doesn’t necessarily mean your food justifies the price. I’m sorry Konomi, but you just proved my point.
