Review : This restaurant is another venture from the people who gave us Smokehouse Grill. For those of you who have read my review of Smokehouse Grill, you will know that the only problem was that the fantastic food was let down by the service.
Fortunately, that is not the case with the Deli. Let’s start with the ambience. The place has both outdoor and indoor seating. The decor is simple yet classy. The indoor section is not very big, but they have managed to make the most of the space that they have.
If there’s one thing that other restaurants can learn from this place, it’s adding a touch of class to the simple things. For example, water is served in vases with a slice of lemon and a sprig of mint. While this doesn’t really change the taste of the water, it looks good! Another example is that the bread basket comes in a small brown sack with the logo of the restaurant on it. Again, nothing over the top but a pleasant change from the literal bread basket.
I found the service to be good and responsive. Again, if you’ve read my review of Smokehouse Grill, you will know that one (of the many) problems I had there was that I was told my steak would come with ‘tenderloin sauce’. I got the same response here. Blasphemous! If you mean Au Jus, say” Au Jus”!! Don’t say freaking tenderloin sauce! Apart from that, I got reasonably attentive service.
The food itself is pretty good. I’ve eaten here a couple of times. The menu includes steaks, salads, pastas, burgers and sandwiches. The signature dish is a lamb burger which is pretty good. The tenderloin burger was not as good. I even ordered a steak the last time I went there… I was still hungry after the steak… too small for my liking. If I’m paying Rs. 700 plus taxes for a steak, I at least expect to not leave hungry. I miss the old fashioned restaurants where food meant food. Nowdays food means 6 bites. Seriously, let this review be an open challenge to Smokehouse Deli : I CAN FINISH YOUR STEAK IN 6 BITES OR LESS. AND I CAN FINISH 3 STEAKS BEFORE I’M FULL!
Desserts are good but after tax, each dessert costs approximately Rs. 350-400. I’d rather walk to the Cinnabon outside the restaurant and compensate for being underfed and financially stretched by having a nice cinnamon roll! So as far as the food is concerned, I can summarize it in 3 words. Good, small and overpriced.
Would I recommend this place? If you are a person obsessed with ‘being seen in the right places even if it means paying excessively high prices for microscopic portions of food’ please do go here because the place gets a lot of high end crowd and is frequented by foreign tourists. The food is good and overpriced, so if you are seen eating here, I would assume that you are rich, not hungry and not a fan of economics. If you a person with common sense, a big appetite, a modest budget and no need for social approval, there are much better places around.
